PLANO, TX-Huffman Builders, with 25 years as a medical office developer in North Texas, is pushing an expansion plan inside and outside the state line.

Jerry Huffman, the Plano-based firm’s president and founder, says offices will open in Houston and Austin while a special development subsidiary has been formed solely for San Antonio office condo projects. Under the plan, Huffman’s sidekick in Plano, John Link, will set up shop in Houston after Thanksgiving and his cousin, Steve Huffman, will begin to market projects in Austin in the coming week. The plan calls for Steve Huffman to replace his Central Texas company, Integra, with the newly formed San Antonio-focused subsidiary, Huffman Development.

The builder’s road show includes the recent opening of a San Diego office, which is under the watch of Dee Young who left Plano to oversee the expansion. Huffman says Young is now shopping for medical office development sites for 80 potential buyers. Meanwhile, the one-year-old Las Vegas operation, led by Michael Young and John Stookey, has topped $100 million in sales.

Huffman says the rapid-fire expansion really wasn’t planned. “I didn’t search it out,” he tells GlobeSt.com. “It just walked through the door.” And, he says, the work has expanded to include state-of-the-art medical projects in addition to condos.

Huffman’s turnkey formula is structured to make it as easy to buy a medical office condo as it is to purchase a home. The firm has in-house teams for site selection, financing and design plus a building materials center. “It’s very much like buying a house,” he says. The company has more than $30 million in projects rising in Texas for a customer base that’s 80% medical affiliated.

Steve Huffman has spent more than two decades developing medical-related product and office condos in San Antonio. The projects underway or on the drawing board will be completed under the new subsidiary’s flag, according to the company’s president. In addition, longtime San Antonio broker Jim Ploetz has been hired to manage marketing and sales for Huffman Development.
