FRASER, MI-Magna International Inc. is moving forward with plans to open a 280,000-sf manufacturing site in a vacant building at 14 Mile and Groesbeck, city officials say. The Ontario-based supplier of automotive systems and components to the Big Three has filed paperwork with the city to receive $11 million in tax abatements granted by the council in October, City Manager Thomas Van Damme reports.

The building that Comerica plans to lease to Magna used to house Citation Tool, a tool-and-die maker. Magna was founded in 1957 in a Toronto garage as a one-man tool and die shop. The company posted third-quarter net earnings of $137 million, nearly triple the $48 million reported in the year-earlier period. Quarterly sales were $4.8 billion, up from $3.5 billion. The company employs about 81,000 people in North and South America, Mexico, Europe and Asia.

“(Magna) is a very good growth company,” Van Damme says. Magna will create about 200 jobs over a five-year period, he adds. Macomb County will offer tax incentives, too, Fraser Mayor Marilyn Lane says.

Although the company is not considering other sites, the deal is contingent on environmental improvements to the Fraser site, part of which is a brownfield. Magna is working with the city and county to come up with a plan to clean up the site, Van Damme says.
