GREENWICH, CT-Swanke Hayden Connell Architects of New York City will design the Hamilton Avenue School, a new pre-K through fifth grade facility for the Greenwich School District. Construction is expected to start next fall and the project will cost approximately $21 million when completed by September 2007.

The project includes 50,000 sf of new construction and the partial restoration and reuse of an historic 1938 building, accounting for an additional 24,000 sf of space. A new below-grade parking facility will more than double the available parking, company officials say. In addition, the project will entail the redevelopment of adjacent playfields into a new community park.

The proposed design will complement the historic fabric of Hamilton Avenue in old Greenwich through the preservation of the front of the existing school–a brick and stone building with a slate roof and signature cupola. Classrooms will be organized in clusters by age group, with each cluster including flexible shared multi-use spaces, Swanke Hayden Connell officials note. A new gymnasium and cafeteria are also planned.

Notable features of the new school building will include sophisticated day lighting strategies, reuse of existing building and building materials, natural ventilation systems, storm water reuse and non-toxic interior finishes. According to Roger Klein, SHCA’s design principal, “In addition to providing badly needed expansion space, the project will result in a high-performance school facility that honors its historic and civic roles in the community. We are creating a state-of-the-art teaching environment for future generations”
