NORTON SHORES, MI-A $41-million “urban village” known as Eastowne is being developed here. Developer Bob Dykstra of Holland is developing the village at Seminole Road and Seaway Drive.

The site plan calls for development of a new building for Muskegon Commerce Bank, redevelopment of the former Irwin’s building for commercial and residential uses, and construction of several other commercial buildings in three phases. Initially developed in the mid-1980s as part of the Mona Kea condominiums, the property had been home to the former Hills Department store, which became Irwin’s Furniture.

The project is set to move forward with the recent award of a $1-million Single Business Tax Credit by the state. City officials expect construction to begin early next year and be completed — depending on market conditions — in the next three years.

“The design is well thought-out in a live, work and play environment,” says Dick Maher, community development director for the city of Norton Shores. “This is the reuse of a piece of property with a lot of promise. This is a project we want to assist but the developer must complete it to get full benefit of the public assistance.
