DEARBORN, MI-The nation’s first national Arab American museum has opened in Dearborn. Secretary General of the Arab League Amre Moussa and ambassadors from several Arab countries cut the ribbon to open the 38,500-sf building on Michigan Avenue.

“Considering the cultural heritage, and a nationwide population of 4.2 million we saw the absence of an Arab American National Museum was glaring. Stir in the fact that there are 15,000 museums in our nation and not one is dedicated to Arab Americans,” said Ismael Ahmed, executive director of ACCESS, or Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services, which built the museum. “This is not only a home run for Arab Americans and our community, but also for all Americans who share a passion for learning.”

More than 30,000 people of Arab heritage live in Dearborn. The museum, built with elements of traditional Arabic architecture, was designed by Dearborn-based GHAFARI and constructed by St. Clair Shores-based J.M. Olson Corp.
