BOSTON – Planners of a slated botanical garden to be constructed on the Rose Kennedy Greenway have ended their association with the project, saying they cannot continue without “a clear designation” from the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority giving them the right to plan, design and build on the land. The decision by Linda and Jonathan Haar, principals with the Boston Planning Institute in Cambridge, could put the project in jeopardy. The couple terminated their contract with Garden Under Glass Inc., an affiliate of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, noting in their termination letter that the pair is owed $476,793 in salary and expenses.

Neither the Haar’s nor a representative for Garden Under Glass returned calls seeking comment. A spokesman from the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority said control of the parcel was turned over to the Massachusetts Horticultural Society by the Legislature about 15 years ago. Allison Aulbridge, marketing coordinator for the state horticultural group tells GlobeSt.com the organization is no longer involved in the project to develop the parcel into a botanical garden and conservation learning center.

“We’re not playing an active role in the project, Aulbridge says. In their letter to Garden Under Glass, the Haars’ said they can no longer continue planning the project without “financial resources.” The couple have been developing the concept, known as the Darwin Project, since 2003. The project has been faced with numerous setbacks including the failure to raise enough funds.
