FARMINGTON HILLS, MI-MAHLE Technology has finished a $6.7 million investment to double the size of its Farmington Hills R&D center. The move will allow the company to further expand its engine testing and measuring operations.

“This new facility exemplifies our commitment to serving the requirements of our automotive and heavy-duty diesel customers for superior engine products from a location that is close to their development facilities,” said Heinz K. Junker, chairman of MAHLE’s management board. “It also demonstrates our commitment to the State of Michigan, and gives us access to a highly-trained work force that enables MAHLE to continue bringing innovative and highly engineered engine products to our customers.”

MAHLE was one of several companies Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm met with during her investment mission to Germany in November 2004. She encouraged the company’s expansion in Michigan. The goal of the mission was to encourage German companies to increase their investments and employment levels in the state.

Germany is Michigan’s largest European trade partner, with trade between the two countries resulting in about $2.5 trillion each year. German companies contribute an estimated $31 billion to Michigan’s economy annually, employing some 172,000 Michigan workers. Some 610 companies in Michigan are German-owned or have at least 50% German ownership. MAHLE was founded in Germany in 1920 and is a manufacturer of components for the automotive and engine industry.
