WASHINGTON, DC-The vision of a mixed-use destination on the 10-acre site of the former Washington Convention Center–conceived by the development team of Hines Interest and Archstone-Smith–gathers steam now that Mayor Anthony A. Williams has decided that he will limit his own decision-making authority on the project through a proposed resolution. With approval of the resolution, Hines and Archstone will be free to move forward with the development, which is scheduled to get under way in 2009.

This step comes two years after the opening of the new 2.3-million-sf Washington Convention Center nearby, two years after Hines and Archstone won the competition to develop the site and six months after the implosion of the old 800,000-sf facility.

The former convention center covers a nine-block area at New York Avenue and 11th Street NW. The Hines and Archstone plan specifies the conversion of the property to a live-work-play destination featuring 300,000 sf of prime office space, 275,000 sf of retail offerings, and more than 770 condominium units. The DC Council will vote on the resolution next week.
