WESTCHESTER, PA-Video game retailer Electronics Boutique Holdings Corp. will acquire Spanish computer and electronics seller Jump Ordenadores S.L.U. for an undisclosed sum in a move that will expand the US-based retailer’s presence in the global gaming market. The deal, which gives Electronics Boutique a foothold in the fourth largest video game market in Europe, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2006.The acquisition plan follows an announcement last month of a merger between Electronics Boutique and its Texas-based rival, GameStop Corp. That merger is set to close in the next quarter. Jump, based in Valencia, Spain, sells computers, software, digital cameras and related products in 141 stores throughout several Spanish provinces. Although terms of the transaction has not been disclosed, Electronics Boutique said it plans to introduce video game hardware and software into those stores during the next few months.”Extending our proven business model into international markets has long been one of our key strategic initiatives.” Jeffrey Griffiths, president and chief executive officer with Westchester, PA-based Electronics Boutique said in a statement announcing the pending acquisition. “The management team at Jump consists of strong retailers with many years of experience in the Spanish market, making them ideal partners for this next phase of our international growth.”Earlier last month, Electronics Boutique agreed to be acquired by Texas-based rival GameStop Corp for $1.4 billion in a merger that will create a chain with 4,000 stores worldwide with sales of about $3,8 billion. That transaction, which is expected to close in the third quarter of 2005, is still awaiting shareholder and regulatory approval.Electronic Boutique currently operates 2,071 stores under the Electronic Boutique and EB Games names in the United States , Puerto Rice, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden.
