LAKEWOOD, CO–Colorado casinos in May recorded their second best month of revenues since limited stakes gambling kicked off in the state in October 1991, according to the latest report by the Colorado Division of Gaming. Statewide, casinos generated $66.2 in April, up 4% from the $63.6 million in May 2004 and an increase of almost 6.4% from the $62.2 million in April. Only the $67.3 million in AGP earned by casinos in July 2004 was greater. AGP is the amount wagered by bettors less payouts from casinos.

Black Hawk’s 21 casinos produced $46.6 million in AGP in May, downslightly form the $46.7 million in May 2004, but an increase from the $44.1 million in April. Cripple Creek, adjacent to Black Hawk, saw its 19 casinos generate $12.9 million in AGP in May, down from the $13.1 million collected in the previous year, but up from the $11.9 million in April.

Central City’s seven casinos generated $6.6 million in AGP last month, up nearly 75.8% from the $3.7 million in May 2004, and up more modestly from the $6.1 million in April. In May, Black Hawk casinos accounted for 70.4% of the statewide market. Black Hawk accounts for about 44.6% of all the casinos in the state, but they tend to be the biggest, newest and the easiest to reach. The gaming establishments in Cripple Creek accounted for 19.6% of the tally, even though they only account for about 15% of all the casinos in the state. Central City’s casinos, which account for about 40% of all of Colorado’s casinos, accounted for only 10% of the AGP. Statewide, casinos paid $11.2 million in gaming tax proceeds in May, an increase of almost $1 million from April.
