GlobeSt.com UPDATE: Broomfield Events Center Gets Hockey Team

BROOMFIELD, CO-Wiens Frew Management Group LLC, headed by Tim Wiens and John Frew, has been awarded a franchise in the Central Hockey League. The team will compete at the planned Broomfield Events Center, previously reported by GlobeSt.com, at the beginning of the 2006 to 2007 CHL season.

Wiens and Frew will own the hockey team, as well as the center. Frew says getting the team took many months of negotiations. He adds that the team will help “build our vision of a world-class event center anchored by a team in the Central Hockey League.”

The events center is a 6,000-seat, multi-purpose event center on the south side of US 36 between West 112th and 120th avenues. The complex, in Wiens’ Arista development, will host more than 130 events each year, including concerts, trade shows, rodeos and sporting events.

“We’re committed to Broomfield, the event center and its home in the new Arista community,” Wiens says. “We’re looking forward to bringing a first class event center to Broomfield that will not only serve as a home to professional hockey, but will host a number of other significant events each year.”

The CHL is comprised of 18 professional minor league hockey teams with 32 regular season home games. Arista is a 200-acre mixed-use development by the Wiens Real Estate Ventures LLC. Arista will include 600,000 to 800,000 sf of retail space and approximately 1,200 residential units, both for-sale and for-rent. The project will be predominantly urban in nature, complete with a neo-traditional “main street,” called Arista Place. Retail shops will line the wide sidewalks of the village core, with residences or offices above. FasTracks will bring a RTD bus rapid transit station on the site, and a future commuter rail stop is planned within walking distance.
