DEERFIELD, IL-Reporting an increase of 12% in June sales, Walgreen Co. pulled in $3.5 million versus $3.12 million for the same month in 2004, with comparable store sales rising 7.8%.

According to the company, pharmacy sales accounted for 65% of total sales for the month, which increased 11.8%. Comparable pharmacy sales increased 8.2%, while total prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 6.5%.

Calendar year-to-date sales were $21.25 million–an increase of 13.3% from $18.75 million in 2004. Fiscal year-to-date sales for the past 10 months were $35.2 million, up 12.8% from $31.2 million during the same period last year. Comparable store sales for the fiscal year-to-date increased 8.5%, and comparable store front-end sales increased 7% during June.

The June report comes just one week after the company reported a 20% earnings growth for both its third quarter and first nine months of fiscal 2005. Sales increased 13.1% to a record $10.8 billion for the third quarter and 12.9% to $31.7 billion for the first nine months. According to the company’s quarterly report, total sales in comparable stores were up 8.7% in Q3, while front-end comparable store sales rose 6.1%.

The company attributed its successful quarter to a 14% increase in prescription sales, which accounted for 65% of total sales. Chairman and CEO David Bernauer also credited the company’s investment in chainwide digital photo labs, which has improved the overall profitability of the company’s photofinishing business.

Walgreens opened 32 stores during June, including three relocations. As of June 30, the company operated 4,834 drugstores in 45 states and Puerto Rico, compared to 4,442 a year ago.
