DENVER-Mayor John Hickenlooper appointed local lawyer Awilda R. Marquez to the board of commissioners for the Denver Housing Authority. The DHA works with HUD and other groups to develop well over $100 million in public-private partnerships to provide affordable housing for low- and middle-income residents.

Developer Bill Mosher, chairman of the DHA, says he welcomes Marquez to the policy-making entity for the nonprofit agency. “She brings an impressive legal career combined with valuable knowledge about federal economic development programs,” Mosher says. “This experience will be extremely beneficial to DHA and the city in helping to guide Denver’s affordable housing programs.”

Marquez is an attorney at the law firm of Hall & Evans. She was chief counsel to the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration agency in Washington, DC for several years, and was later nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the US Senate to be Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Director General of the US Commercial Service. Recently, Marquez represented the states of Colorado and Hawaii, practicing tort litigation in the Office of the Attorney General of each of those states.

Marquez received her law degree from the University of Maryland, School of Law in 1988 with honors. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University, magna cum laude, in 1980, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Marquez is a member of the Bar Associations of Colorado, Hawaii and Maryland, the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association and the Colorado Women’s Bar Association. Marquez is fluent in English, French and Spanish and speaks some Bengali.
