SAGINAW, MI-Hausbeck Pickle, which has been in the city for more than 60 years, is undergoing a $2-million cleanup and expansion of property in a renaissance zone. The recently acquired site, located at 1626–2000 Hess Ave. within the Lufkin Rule/Hess Avenue/Fairgrounds Renaissance Zone, already has an existing vacant six-year-old, 40,000-sf warehouse. According to Tim Hausbeck, general manager of Hausbeck Pickle, ground will break during December 2005 on an additional 45,000-sf building, with the building scheduled for completion by June 2006.

When all is complete, the company will have an additional 85,000 sf of property. Hausbeck tells GlobeSt.com that there were two reasons why this particular site was chosen from another potential site in Indiana. “It’s closer to our current production building; it’s two miles down the road so no one has to move,” he says. Second, it’s in a renaissance zone, which helps with expenses. The company has already received a brownfield Single Business Tax credit of $225,500 from the Michigan Economic Development Corp.

“We’ve already cleaned up the site, now we’re ready to modify the current building and build the addition,” Hausbeck says. He adds that modification will primarily involve converting the current space to a production and food processing building.

The family-owned business, which supplies pickles and pickled pepper products to large commercial restaurants and retailers including Burger King and Subway, launched in 1923 and is currently located at 3444 East St. The company plans to use the new property primarily for production and warehousing.
