BOSTON-The city has broken ground on a $52-million international cargo facility at South Boston’s Marine Industrial Park. The project, which is being developed by the city’s Economic Development and Industrial Corp., will replace several aging warehouse buildings between Northern and Drydock avenues.

The new site will be a 305,000-sf, two-building complex known as the International Cargo Center of New England. The center, which will be used for maritime, industrial and commercial uses, is being constructed on land formerly owned by the Army and Navy.

The center’s main tenant will be Boston Freight Terminal, which will take about 90,000 sf, effectively tripling the firm’s capacity. The remaining space will be available for lease. International Cargo Center will have a 65-year lease on the land, which is owned by the city.
