OLDMANS TWP., NJ-The JE Berkowitz Glass Co. has signed a deal to build a 200,000-sf manufacturing facility on a 22-acre site here. With the completion of the new construction, the company will move its operations, including its headquarters, to this Salem County township from its current 180,000-sf facility in Westville, Camden County.

JE Berkowitz was represented by Merrill Freedman of the NAI Mertz Corp., Mt. Laurel. The specialty glassmaker has also hired Norwood Construction of Allentown, PA to build its new building, which is expected to be completed by early next year. Terms of the transaction were not released.

The company’s new site is within Matrix Development Group’s Gateway Business Park near Exit 7 of the New Jersey Turnpike. Ken Griffin, a principal of the Cranbury-based Matrix, says the park is “a great example of a successful public and private partnership at work. We worked very closely with the township and with Salem County to create this new investment and ratables.”

The park itself consists of a total of more than 280 acres of vacant land with a build-out capability in the neighborhood of 3.5 million sf including the Berkowitz building. The latter is the initial major commitment to the park, for which Matrix is targeting warehouse, distribution and manufacturing uses. According to Griffin, site improvements are in place and utilities are at the site’s perimeters.

JE Berkowitz is an 85-year-old private, family-owned glass fabricator that makes tempered, insulating, spandrel and silk-screened glass and glass doors for the domestic and overseas architectural markets. The company will be relocating approximately 225 employees once its building is ready for occupancy.
