BOSTON-Boston University will add housing for 1,500 students with the construction of two high-rise dormitories on Commonwealth Avenue. The building boom could eventually lead to housing 90% of the school’s students on the university’s Boston campus.

Plans for the new dorms, filed recently with Boston City Hall, call for the $100-million complex to contain two connected towers of 19 and 26 stories, featuring single- and double-bedroom apartment suites with living rooms, kitchens and baths. The dorms, expected to open in three years, still need approval from the city.

The complex was the second dormitory expansion announced by a Boston school in the past two weeks. Last week, Northeastern University said it plans to build two 22-story dormitory towers and an administration and retail building on its Boston campus to house nearly 2,000 students. That complex is expected to open by 2009. The school also will seek approval to eventually build another dormitory on the site of a Northeastern-owned parking lot on Gainsborough Street, across from Matthews Arena.
