In an active recruiting environment,  when there is high demand for talent like we have experienced over the past 18 months, conventional wisdom holds that compensation is the driver that attracts high-performing professionals.  However, this is actually not so, and money is only one of the motivators.  We have observed that most professionals want and expect challenging work, a path to growth and expansion of their roles, working for decent people, an organization that is well respected and a comfortable and attractive working environment.  All of these elements impact an individual’s satisfaction with their job.  When these are not present, then the stage is set for consideration of new opportunities.  Money doesn’t buy happiness, even in the workplace.
