DEDHAM, MA-Construction has been completed on a $13-million, 42,000-sf Arts Center at Noble and Greenough School, giving the school its first 260-seat theater, a painting studio, music practice rooms and 1,500 sf rehearsal room.

“With the Arts Center in place, the school now makes a statement literally right up front that our school values the arts,” says Bill Chamberlin, Nobles’ assistant head for finance and operations. “We’ve always had an excellent arts program, and now we have a facility to match.”

Ryan Lynch, project manager with Shawmut Design and Construction, tells GlobeSt.com that planning for the theater complex took extensive coordination between school officials and the development team, who had to work around full school and athletic schedules to get the job completed.

“It was a true team effort from conception to completion,” says Lynch, noting that the two year construction process also included the rebuilding of roads and drainage systems. The arts complex, which created the school’s first theater, took about 14 months to build, he adds.

The project, designed by ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge and built by Shawmut Design and Construction, of Boston, also features four general-use classrooms, gallery space, a digital music and video production lab and lobby and support space.

As part of the project, ARC also designed renovations to the adjacent Lawrence Auditorium, turning into an assembly center and concert hall that allows for greater seating capacity and improved acoustics. The renovations also include a new heating and cooling system and a permanent musical shell built into the stage.
