BOSTON-Boston Redevelopment Authority director Mark Maloney will step down from his post Jan.12 after seven years of leading a city-wide planning and development effort that dramatically changed the face of the city. Former executive assistant to Maloney, Paul McCann, will take over the director’s duties until a new director is appointed.

Maloney tells GlobeSt.com that he will continue to advise Mayor Thomas M. Menino on planning and development issues on a volunteer basis but will leave his BRA job to “do some long-planned travel.”

Under his leadership, Maloney led the city’s push to develop the South Boston waterfront, the Fort Point Channel and the Longwood medical area, but he his greatest accomplishments came from the revitalization of the Dudley Square area in Roxbury and the creation of more than 17,000 housing units in the city. “It’s been a great opportunity for me to learn about a city I love,” he says of his tenure.

Maloney, 55, was tapped by the mayor to head the BRA in 2000 after retiring from Maloney Properties Inc., a property management firm that oversees more than 7,000 residential apartments in Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island.
