PRINCETON, NJ-Work is expected to start in April for construction of 100 residential units within this city’s Downtown Palmer Square mixed-use development. The project, which is expected to take about a year, will complete the residential component of the Hulfish North project, the start of which dates back some two decades.

Plans for the locally based Palmer Square Management’s project call for 100 rental units made up of 17 two-story townhouses and 83 single-floor apartments in a group of three- and four-story buildings, according to PSM vice president David Newton. The residential buildings will rise both atop and around the Hulfish Street parking Garage. The site is on the northern end of Palmer Square, along this city’s Paul Robeson Place.

Planning for the Hulfish North project dates back some two decades, but to date fewer than 20 units have been built, those coming in the early 1990s. In the interim, further construction has been delayed by a variety of issues, including design factors, land ownership and an affordable housing component. As reported by GlobeSt.com, the project got final approval from the Princeton Regional Planning Board in late 2005.

Palmer Square itself began to take shape Downtown, across from the campus of Princeton University, more than 70 years ago. To date, it consists of the 203-key Nassau Inn, 150,000 sf of office space, 50 retail stores, nearly 150 residential units and two parking facilities.
