TUSTIN, CA-Costco, Lowe’s and dozens of other tenants have made their debut or will soon do so at the one-million-sf District at Tustin Legacy regional center. It is the first new regional center to open in Orange County in the last decade.

It is located at the corner of Jamboree Rd. and Barranca Pkwy. The center, slated for its grand opening on Aug. 17, is a project of Vestar Development Co., which is the center’s developer and its management company.

The open-air lifestyle and entertainment center is part of the larger Tustin Legacy project, a redevelopment of the former Marine Corps Air Station here that will also include office, residential and other types of development. Jeffrey M. Axtell, project director for Vestar Development, notes that the retail center will feature walkways and bike paths that will eventually connect it with other components of the Tustin Legacy project.

In addition to Costco and Lowe’s, dozens of other tenants have either opened at the retail center or are scheduled to open soon. They include PetSmart, T.J. Maxx/Home Goods, an AMC 14-screen theater, a Whole Foods Market, Michael’s art supply, Target, Best Buy, Johnny Rocket’s and a host of other shops, restaurants and entertainment choices that are household names.

Axtell notes that with some tenants already open, others scheduled soon and others opening in the fall, construction is still under way in some areas of the project, limiting access for now. The center’s access roads now are Barranca Pkwy. and Tustin Ranch Rd., plus a newly opened entrance off Warner Ave.

Another component of the Tustin Legacy project that is expected to get under way soon is the first 340,000 sf of office space at the development. Shea Properties of Aliso Viejo expects to begin construction within the next six months on the first phase of the office space, which will feature an office and R&D campus of two- and three-story buildings along Red Hill and Warner avenues.
