WASHINGTON, DC-Merrit Drucker has joined the NoMA’s Business Improvement District in Washington, DC as director of operations. A former cabinet-level official under Mayor Adrian Fenty, directing the mayor’s office of community relations and services, Drucker will be responsible for maintenance, cleaning, and safety in NoMA’s 35 blocks.

Drucker has also served as the district’s clean city coordinator and neighborhood services coordinator for Ward 4. Among his first responsibilities at the BID will be to oversee the sidewalk cleaning services that are set to begin next month.

“My first priority will be to conduct a thorough cleanup of the area, make needed repairs, and coordinate with all the property owners to ensure ongoing maintenance,” Drucker says. “With numerous large construction projects going on simultaneously in NoMA, we will work diligently to maintain safety and sanitation throughout the transition period.”

Besides cleaning and safety, NoMA will also be focusing on infrastructure upgrades in anticipation of even more development in the area, according to Elizabeth Price, president of the NoMA BID. She tells GlobeSt.com that the District has already budgeted money for next fiscal year to make major upgrades to the intersection of New York and Florida avenues, a critical intersection in NoMA.

“Right now that intersection is not pedestrian friendly,” Price says. “The city will be making some traffic improvements to improve safety.” There are also plans to improve the railroad underpasses, which are too dark.

“Part of what the BID is trying to do is understand and better coordinate with the city’s plans,” she adds. “There are important infrastructure needs that have to be address as NoMa continues to grow.”
