MONTCLAIR, CA-General Growth Properties of Chicago has kicked off the renovation of its 1.3-million-sf Montclair Plaza, where Nordstrom is slated to begin its own renovations in February. Retailers will remain open during the interior remodeling, which will update a property that originally opened in 1968 as a single-level regional center. The renovations are scheduled to be completed in October.

In addition to the renovations, General Growth Properties is also developing plans to create a retail expansion for a vacant former Macy’s building, according to Larry Martin, general manager of Montclair Plaza. The renovation and remodeling will include interior finishing of common areas, replacing of the handrails throughout the entire mall, new ceiling materials and lighting to soften the industrial look of exposed metal beams, new fixtures and furniture, soft seating and new balconies. Other features of the project will include the addition of new family restrooms on the lower level in the Sear’s wing, a new play area will be adjacent to the family restrooms, replacement of the food court bridge and a host of other upgrades and additions.

Nordstrom’s remodeling plan will be designed to make the 134,000-sf store more inviting, including new tile and carpeting, updated dressing rooms, new concept fixtures and updated lighting in every department, as well as new exterior landscaping. Nordstrom will also be remodeling its café.

Montclair Plaza has grown through remodeling and expansion to include more than 200 retailers. In addition to its anchors and retail shops, the mall features restaurants that include Applebee’s, Olive Garden, Elephant Bar, Tony Roma’s, Acapulco, Stuart Anderson’s Black Angus, Romano’s Macaroni Grill and Chili’s Grill and Bar. New retailers coming to Montclair Plaza this year include Coach, Aldo, Champs and New Image Salon & Spa.

General Growth has not disclosed a price tag for the Montclair Plaza renovations, which mark the first major upgrades to the mall in about 20 years. The property is located at 5060 Montclair Plaza Lane off of the Interstate 10 Freeway.
