NASHVILLE, TN-Nordstrom Inc., the Seattle-based specialty fashion retailer, has signed a letter of intent to open a new anchor store at the Mall at Green Hills with plans to open its first Tennessee location in the fall of 2010. The three-level, 149,000-sf department store will become part of the 735,000-sf upscale mall owned and managed by Nashville-based Davis Street Land Co.

The Nashville location marks another spot on the Southeast map where Nordstrom aims to open additional stores over the next four years. Others are scheduled to open at Waterside Shops in Naples, FL, this November; followed by University Town Center in Sarasota, FL, in 2010; and Riverchase Galleria in Birmingham, AL, in 2012.

“Overall, our goal is to be in the best retail markets and the best centers,” Nordstrom spokesman Michael Boyd tells GlobeSt.com. “We haven’t penetrated the Southeast as much and we really enjoy the response from customers in that market. We feel there is room to grow.”

Nordstrom has been making a push to expand within the Southeast as far back as 2000, when it opened its first Florida store in Boca Raton. The chain has several others in major retail markets throughout Florida, plus three stores in Atlanta and two North Carolina stores in Charlotte and Durham.

The Mall at Green Hills, at 2126 Abbott Martin Road in Nashville, features more than 100 unique retailers and restaurants anchored by Macy’s and Dillard’s. Robert Perlmutter, Davis Street managing partner, stated in a press release that he is pleased that Nordstrom chose his company’s mall to open its first Tennessee location, adding that the store will be “a terrific addition for the entire Nashville marketplace.”

Nordstrom, which began as a Seattle shoe store in 1901, has a total of 159 stores in 28 states, including 105 full-line stores. The company has set a goal of opening 150 full-line stores by 2015, Boyd says.
