ST. LOUIS-The Joint Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children has agreed to spend $107 million for a new 247,000-sf replacement hospital at the Washington University Medical Center campus. The Shriners have purchased the property for the site, which includes a parking lot and a former Pepsi Bottling Co. facility from the college. Construction should begin in 2009, and will be completed in 2012, a Shriners spokeswoman tells GlobeSt.com. A groundbreaking even twill be held July 3, when the Shriners international convention will be in St. Louis.

Architectural firm Gresham Smith & Partners is designing the facility, which will be at 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd. The hospital will include 40 inpatient beds, four surgical suites and 30 clinic examination rooms.

In a statement, hospital administrator John O’Shaughnessy said that “the closer our Shriners Hospital is to the resources of the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis Children’s Hospital as well as other facilities of (our) BJC Healthcare organization, the more effective we can be in providing care to our children and more fully collaborate in research and education.” One floor of the hospital will be dedicated to research sharing between the two entities. “The location will allow the researchers to work together better,” the spokeswoman says. The college and the healthcare company have been partners for years, and many on the Shriners hospital staff are already faculty members.

The current Shriners hospital, a 15-acre site at 2001 Lindbergh Blvd, will be sold once the new hospital is open. The site is reportedly worth $12 million to BJC.
