ARLINGTON, VA-New York City-based Monday Properties has hired 32-year industry veteran James Berkon as vice president of design and construction. He will report to Timothy Helmig, executive vice president, chief development officer and head of the company’s Washington, DC region.

Berkon’s immediate task at hand is to oversee the demolition and then reconstruction of 1812 N. Moore St. in Rosslyn, VA. The 580,000-sf, 35-story office tower will be the tallest building in the submarket, once its redevelopment is complete. Longer term, he will help guide the company’s plans to redevelop much of its Rosslyn portfolio over the next 10 years into class A trophy buildings and mixed-use projects. “The [Westreich] family built a lot of the buildings in Rosslyn,” Berkon tells GlobeSt.com. “In the intervening decades zoning here has increased, allowing for larger and taller buildings.”

In May 2007, Monday Properties completed the purchase of a 10-building, 2.5 million-sf office portfolio from Beacon Properties for $1.23 billion. These 10 buildings represent 30% of Rosslyn’s office market, the company says. They are the 1.1 million-sf Twin Towers, 1000 Wilson Blvd. and 1100 Wilson Blvd.; 1101 Wilson Blvd., a 325,830-sf office; 1200 Wilson Blvd., which is 145,702 sf; the 280,259-sf 1701 N. Fort Myer Dr.; the 359,724-sf 1400 Key Blvd. and 1401 Wilson Blvd.; the 241,844-sf 1501-1515 Wilson Blvd.; and the 82,326-sf 2990 Telestar Ct. This portfolio was developed by Westfield Realty, which was co-founded in 1965 by Stanley Westreich, Anthony Westreich’s father. Anthony Westreich is now the CEO of Monday Properties.

Berkon was director of design and construction for Brookfield Properties in the District, supervising the ongoing development of the 326,000-sf 77 K St. Prior to that, he spent years with CarrAmerica Development, most recently as vice president. There, he oversaw the construction of a number of major District landmarks, including the 750,000-sf International Monetary Fund headquarters at 1900 Pennsylvania Ave., and the 229,000-sf 1201 F St. office building.
