NEW YORK CITY-NYU Langone Medical Center has received two gifts totaling $260 million to support major expansion of the hospital and medical school Midtown campus along the East River. Benefactor Helen Kimmel, widow of the late Martin Kimmel, is donating $150 million toward construction of a new patient pavilion at the Medical Center that will increase the NYU clinical space by as much as 50%. It will be named in honor of Helen Kimmel and her late husband, the co-founder of Kimco Realty.

The second gift–$110 million–will be used to redesign Tisch Hospital, NYU’s renowned flagship hospital, built in 1963. It comes from a longstanding family of NYU benefactors who wishes to remain anonymous, according to a release from NYU Langone.

Helen and Martin Kimmel, both trustees of the medical center, earlier established research centers for stem cell biology and for biology and medicine, endowed two basic science professorships and supported a wide range of specific research programs, according to a release. NYU expects to break ground on the new Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion in about four years and to have it fully up and running in seven years.

This year, NYU Langone launched its new name and brand identity, following a $100-million donation from Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone and his wife Elaine. The hospital expanded its network of physicians as it opened new ambulatory care facilities at Downtown and in Westchester County, as well as a large multi-specialty center in Queens. New affiliations, ranging from Woodhull Hospital to Clinico Modelo in northern Manhattan, have contributed to making NYU the largest academic affiliate of New York City’s Health and Hospitals Corp., the release states.
