HOUSTON-Commissioners with the Port of Houston Authority approved advertising requests for construction and design bids on a variety of projects. Items approved at the commissioners’ November 25 meeting included advertising for contractors for Bayport Terminal’s 48-acre Phase 1-Stage 2 container yard, a development valued up to $60 million.

“The Phase 1-Stage 2 container yard will expand the acreage of the current yard by more than 40%,” comments Port of Houston Authority Executive Director H. Thomas Kornegay,. He says Phase 1-Stage 1, encompassing the first 45 acres of the container yard, was completed in January 2008.

Commissioners also approved issuing a request for designer qualifications for the Phase 2 container yard, which will provide an additional 55 acres of storage to be built in 2009 and 2010. The estimated construction costs on this phase will range from $55 million to $66 million. Approval was also issued for a request for designer qualifications on Berth Nos. 4 and 5 at the terminal.

“Both the Phase 2 container yard and Berths 4 and 5 are scheduled to be awarded by January 2012,” Kornegay says. “With some of the earlier contracts, the designs will be developed so incremental construction can occur, as necessary, to match demand.”

Kornegay tells GlobeSt.com that construction is proceeding on schedule based on Bayport Terminal’s overall master plan. He adds that the overall construction timeline has been accelerated, partly because the terminal’s groundbreaking had been delayed until 2004.

The commissioners at the Tuesday meeting also mulled over awarding construction contracts to Houston-based Satterfield and Pontikes Construction Inc. for the Bayport Administration and Bayport Maintenance and Repair buildings. Kornegay says a decision on the award was tabled until December.
