ATLANTA-InterContinental Hotels Group is trying out a new online system aimed at helping general managers at its 4,100 locations worldwide reduce waste along with water and energy consumption. The company believes its “Green Engage” software can save as much as $200 million, with potential energy savings of up to 25%.

The trial begins immediately with 650 hotels among IHG’s seven brands, including Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and InterContinental, with a full rollout planned by midyear. UK-based IHG has its North American headquarters in Atlanta.

“This is an important initiative for IHG, our hotel owners and our guests,” Andy Cosslett, the company’s chief executive, stated in a release. “Green Engage is a practical tool designed to help improve environmental performance, reduce costs and respond to our guests’ increasing awareness of this issue.”

Managers will use the software to input data from each hotel site, after which the system automatically compares those of a similar nature around the globe. A resulting list of actions then goes to each hotel, which may range from benchmarks for reducing carbon emissions to using organic cleaning materials.

IHG designed its Green Engage program in response to growing interest from guests who demand sustainability from their favorite hotel brands and factor environmental impact into booking decisions as much as location and price. Last year, the company launched an online guest feedback system, called Innovation Hotel, that presented an example of what a future hotel might look like if it used green technologies.
