CLARKSVILLE, MD-Howard County is seeking bids from developers interested in rehabilitating a former school site that is zoned for a mixed-use development. It is one of the few remaining opportunities in the area for a project of this size, according to the county. Located just off Rte. 32 at the intersection of Clarksville Pike and Great Star Drive, the 7.7-acre site contains a school building that was originally constructed in 1939.

Various additions were added to the school over the years, which served as a junior high school for decades; then it was transformed into the special needs Gateway School until 2002. Until 2007, the Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue used it as a training facility.

Today the property consists of the school building, a free-standing garage and two small ancillary sheds. The County is requesting proposals from developers to acquire and develop the site. Richard Fields, senior vice president of Manekin LLC’s brokerage division, Manekin’s Liz Tarran-Jones, George Santos and Owen Rouse of Manekin and Robert Peck, managing director of Jones Lang LaSalle have been tapped to assist the county in the sale and redevelopment. Manekin did not return a call to GlobeSt.com in time for publication.

The county wants the site to be redeveloped into a mixed-use, environmentally conscious, pedestrian-oriented project with public amenities. The final bidder will be selected in September, with settlement expected by year-end.
