MALIBU, CA-A new retail center has debuted here along Pacific Coast Highway in one of the few such developments to open in Malibu in recent years. The project, called Malibu Lumber Yard, is a 32,000-square-foot, outdoor, lifestyle retail center on a 2.7-acre former lumber yard site.

The development team for the project included co-developers Richard A. Sperber, president and CEO of Calabasas-based ValleyCrest Landscape Cos. and Richard Weintraub, president and CEO of Weintraub Financial Services in Malibu. The developers describe the new property as a high-end, boutique retail center and family destination that provides consumer appeal while doing its part to protect the environment.

Tenants include local and national companies such as Maxfield, Tory Burch, Intermix, Kitson Men, James Perse, alice + olivia, J.Crew, Planet Blue Kids, Theory and Andriana Shamaris. Other offerings include Café Habana, Crumbs cupcakes; a children’s dance studio, a soon to-be-revealed salon and spa, and a variety of restaurants. The center also features a full-service special event space that can be utilized for pop-up stores, private parties and special events.

The center’s design incorporates advanced water and energy conservation techniques, according to the developers, as well as sustainable building and landscaping materials. In addition, the Malibu Lumber Yard features a waste-water treatment system that can treat up to 17,000 gallons of the shopping center’s wastewater each day, exceeding applicable water quality standards.

The design team included a collaboration between ValleyCrest Design Group’s JamesHyatt Studio and Comstock Studio, and Los Angeles-based RTK Architecture. The center was built by Matt Construction in Los Angeles while the development management was coordinated by Brett Thornton of TDG Corp. in Los Angeles. Karen Klein of Santa Monica-based Epstein & Associates and Jay Luchs of CB Richard Ellis are handling the leasing assignment.
