ST. JAMES PARISH, LA-The Baton Rouge Business Report says while Nucor Steel is waiting for an air quality permit from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it has begun assembling land for a potential $4 billion pig iron plant. The North Carolina steel company has shelled out $16.3 million for 890 acres.

Though Nucor has not definitely committed to placing its facility in the parish, the Baton Rouge Business Report indicates that Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret is “cautiously optimistic” that the plant will end up in the state. GlobeSt.com previously reported that the company was strongly considering the area for its plant

.”We certainly view the company’s decision to begin purchasing land to assemble the proposed site as a very positive indicator of Nucor’s interest in Louisiana,” Moret said. Nucor has said that demand for steel has slowed due to the worldwide recession which, in turn, has slowed its timeline for the plant.
