RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA-Lowe Enterprises of Los Angeles has opened the doors to its $480 million, 102-acre, 582-room Terranea resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a project 10 years in the making. The Mediterranean-styled resort is among the largest developments to open in Los Angeles County this year and occupies a site that was once home to Marineland of the Pacific, an ocean-themed attraction that closed 20 years ago.

Bob Lowe, chairman and CEO of Lowe Enterprises, calls Terranea “the crowning achievement of our company.” He notes that it may well be the last large resort built along the Southern California coast.

The new development is managed by a Lowe subsidiary, Destination Hotels & Resorts. It comprises a 360-room hotel, 20 bungalows, 50 oceanfront casitas and 32 ocean-view villas.

The resort’s amenities include 135,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a nine-hole golf course called the Links at Terranea; the 25-room Spa at Terranea; three ocean-view pools; a secluded beach cove and a collection of eight restaurants, bars and lounges. A children’s center offers interactive nature programs, and the resort links to several miles of bluff-top trails that connect to miles of off-property coastal trails.

Lowe Enterprises developed the new resort with “sensitivity to protect the natural environment and scenic coastline,” the company says in its description of the project. Lowe preserved 45 trees on the site that date back more than 50 years, which were boxed before construction and then replanted. In addition, Lowe planted 14 acres of natural Coastal Sage Scrub habitat to recreate the natural California coastal terrain. The design includes a series of water quality systems to treat and clean rainwater runoff and help protect the ocean.
