WASHINGTON, DC-NoMA is hoping that a tax abatement for non-profits’ acquisition of office space in the submarket will spur interest among this group. That’s according to BID director Liz Price and president Bruce Baschuk, speaking this morning at the BID’s Board of Director’s meeting. One of NoMA BID’s near-term goals, he said to the audience is the co-introduction “of new legislation to attract non-profits.” Baschuk is also president of J Street Development.

NoMa has already successfully pushed through legislation for a residential tax abatement. That measure is hoped to result in the development and/or sale of 3,000 residential units, BID Director Liz Price said at the event. J Street, of course, is an active developer in NoMa; it is getting set to top off one of its projects there – 111 K St., NE, an 11-story, 90,000 square foot office condo building that is scheduled to deliver in Q1 2010. Non-profits that have acquired offices there include Sierra Club and the YWCA.

The meeting also carved out time to give the audience – which included City Council members John Evans and Vincent Gray – an update on NoMa’s progress. Since the BID’s establishment some 60,000 square feet in retail leases have been signed and 719,000 square feet in office space.
