WASHINGTON, DC-The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has taken a step closer to building a new $90-million facility with the facility’s land purchase. The garage is intended to house 114 buses, replacing capacity that WMATA lost when it sold a similar facility to a private sector. The agency has purchased 16.1-acres of land owned by the District in southwest’s DC Village for $6.45 million.

WMATA’s former garage was located near Nationals Park. That facility, located at Half and M streets, SE, was sold earlier this year to Akridge, which is planning to build a $330-million, 704,000-square-foot mixed-use project on that plot. The location of the new garage in Ward 8 has the ability to support up to 250 buses. With the land sale complete, site preparation work can begin. However, groundbreaking has not been set yet, a WMATA spokesman tells GlobeSt.com.

The District’s new Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Valerie Santos, made the announcement of the land sale, noting it will help the city offset its current budget gap. The new facility will also further build out space in an isolated and little developed part of the city. With few residential or retail amenities close by, DC Village–an industrial park–is best suited for such projects as a bus depot. Most recently, the District and Akridge recently broke ground on a municipal project there: a $20-million property and evidence warehouse, located at 34 DC Village Lane, SW.
