HARRISBURG, PA-The state Gaming Control this Friday will hold a hearing on whether it should extend the slots license for Foxwoods Casino. Philadelphia Partnership and Development Corp. received one of two casino licenses for Philadelphia in May 2008 and was expected to have Foxwoods up and running with 1,500 slot machines by May 2009.

Just before the deadline the Foxwoods partnership requested a two-year extension because it wanted to consider changing the location of its planned casino. It has been approved for a waterfront casino on Columbus Boulevard in South Philadelphia but, in response to substantial citizen opposition, now wants to consider the old Strawbridge & Clothier department store at 801 Market St.

The hearing is for the purpose of providing Foxwoods’ the opportunity to establish good cause for the extension and to answer any questions the Board members may have regarding the matter. Lawyers for the gaming board have reportedly argued against granting an extension due to a lack of information about what was happening with the planned casino, but more information is expected to be provided by the Foxwoods partnership on Friday.

Gaming board spokesman Richard McGarvey tells GlobeSt.com that three other casino developers have requested time extensions—two of which were already under construction–and all three have been approved. If the extension is approved, the partnership would still have to come back to the board if it wants approval for a new location.
