[IMGCAP(1)]BAKERSFIELD, CA-The Kern County Planning Commission has voted 3-2 to recommend approval of the Tejon Mountain Village resort to the county board of supervisors. The project, a partnership of Tejon Ranch Co. and Scottsdale, AZ-based DMB Associates, is planned for a 26,417-acre site on Tejon Ranch 40 miles south of Bakersfield in the Tehachapi Mountains. It would create up to 3,450 new homes, ranging from resort condominiums to multi-acre custom lots, along with 160,000 square feet of commercial space and new tourist and resort facilities, plus recreational amenities including golf, horseback riding, hiking and bicycling.

[IMGCAP(2)]The joint venture of Tejon and DMB that is planning the project is called Tejon Mountain Village LLC. In the signing of the joint venture agreement and in earlier announcements regarding the JV, both companies have emphasized that sensitivity to the environment will be a key feature of the project, which will be developed on some of the most pristine terrain in Southern California. The plan proposes to preserve 80% of the 26,417-acre development site as open space.

Robert A. Stine, president and CEO of Tejon Ranch Co., said following the planning commission’s recent vote that the publicly held company’s focus “now turns to presenting our plans to the Kern County Board of Supervisors in the coming weeks.”The planning commission vote followed the May 27 release of Kern County’s draft environmental impact report for Tejon Mountain Village. The resort plan is expected to come before the supervisors in coming weeks.

The developers estimate that the project will generate 3,100 new jobs, including 1,600 construction jobs during the expected build out of 15 to 20 years for the project. The project will also provide funding for public services such as fire stations and equipment, sheriff facilities, libraries and schools as well as improvements to local interchanges with Interstate 5.
