COPENHAGEN-European cargo volume rose in September, according to the most recent European Freight Forwarding Index from Danske Bank. The index rose to 65, up 15 points from the August reading.

According to the poll, which surveys 152 freight forwarders all across the continent, the increase held true for all transport modes. “We see a broad-based recovery when looking across both countries and [transport] segments,” the report says.

Though forwarders’ expectations fell slightly from 78 to 75, bank analysts point out they are still at a very high level. The reading indicates respondents expect volume to continue to improve in Q4.

Regionally, Eastern Europe experienced strongest performing, with its index rising from 37 in August to 65 in September. The UK followed, with its index going from 56 to 73. In regard to transport mode, air freight performed best, with its index increasing from 40 to 71.

The bank regards the first half of 2010 as the next critical period because the current inventory cycle comes to an end. It says further improvement in freight volumes will have to be driven by an improvement in the underlying economy.
