MINNEAPOLIS-Locally-based Ryan Cos. US Inc. has been awarded an $88 million construction management contract to renovate the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building at Fort Snelling. According to a report in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, the deal has yet to be signed but a US General Services Administration spokesperson confirmed the selection. The contract is said to be worth $88 million.

The GSA has allotted $115 million to the Whipple Building project. A portion of that has already gone toward Hammel, Green and Abrahamson Inc. The company was designated the designer on the project, taking $8.67 million of the pie.

Ryan wasn’t the only company vying for the contract. Although the total number of submitted bids hasn’t been released, companies like Mortenson Construction, Knutson Construction Services Inc., Adolfson & Peterson Construction, JE Dunn and Skanska USA Building Inc. were among the potential contractors.

The Whipple Building was built in 1969. The 617,600-square-foot facility houses a number of offices including Veterans Affairs, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security. Roughly 1,200 employees have offices there.

The renovation of the building focuses mainly around making the place more energy efficient and is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Construction is slated to start in August 2011 and it likely to take two to three years to complete.
