JACKSONVILLE, FL-The Jacksonville Business Journal reports that the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration has granted a Certificate of Need for an acute-care hospital on the west side of town. With certificate in hand, Nashville-based Hospital Corporation of America Inc. will soon break ground on West Jacksonville Medical Center at an estimated cost of $100 million.

The article states that HCA’s project will have a three-story, 85-bed community hospital and a 200,000-square-foot medical building. The center will be a full-service one, complete with an emergency department, cardiac catheterization lab, an obstetrical unit, operating rooms, an intensive care unit, a medical/surgical unit and extensive diagnostics services, the article explains.

A website describing the project says the need for a medical center on the west side of Jacksonville was driven by population growth. People living west of Interstate 295 and south of Interstate 10 have “relatively poor access to health care facilities” compared to other people living in the city, the website explains. The website also shows that zip codes on the west side have shown a need for 217 additional beds. “As more people move into the area, the need will only continue to rise,” the website says.
