WE'VE HAD SOME GOO D NEWS COME OUT of Washington lately. For one, the unemployment rate beat expectations when it fell to 7.8% in September, its lowest level since January 2009, reported the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

And even though only 114,000 new jobs were added to overall payrolls, the 30-basis-point improvement in unemployment was the biggest jump that figure took since January 2011, which saw the same increase. Meanwhile, the employment-population ratio hit its highest level since May 2010, 58.7%.
