Los Angeles Nearly 100,000 Los Angeles residents signed the petition for Build Better L.A.

LOS ANGELES—Build Better L.A. has secured nearly 100,000 signatures to ensure its affordable housing measure will be on the ballot in November. To qualify for the ballot, the initiative would have needed to gather 62,000 signatures. A group of labor and affordable housing advocates are leading the initiative, and gathered signatures from Los Angeles residents through grassroots efforts and door-to-door canvasing. The significant number of signatures shows the community support for the initiative, according to organizers.

“The City of Los Angeles is getting more and more expensive to live in each day, and City residents see the value in creating more homes people could afford and good jobs they could rely on,” Rusty Hicks, executive secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO and convener of Build Better L.A., tells GlobeSt.com. “We were definitely aiming to get the 62,000 valid signatures, but seeing the wide support of nearly 100,000 voters who want to see this on the November ballot is telling to the future they want for Los Angeles. Voters want to have the opportunity to vote on how housing that’s affordable and good jobs are produced in Los Angeles.”
