In June, Keith Brown purchased six of the 25 stores that Helen Jo and Bill Whitsell have unloaded. At least 18 other Copeland stores have been closed. The couple announced in April 1999 that they would sell their stores and retire.
With 1999 sales of $191 million - down 7.3 percent from 1998 - National Home Center News ranked Copeland 28th for total sales earlier this year. The stores derived 90 percent of their revenue from professionals and distributors who sell direct to professionals, according to the industry publication.
