The firm, which has played a major role in human-genome research, expects to buy an 80-acre property near Pleasanton, Calif. The property is currently owned by Kaiser Aluminum Corp., which is moving to Texas.

Applied Biosystems is eyeing the property for a 960,000-sf campus. County officials value the site at $40.5 million. The company plans to use it for a mixture of office, laboratory, light manufacturing and warehouse space.

Company officials say the campus would eventually accommodate 2,600 employees, with 2,000 others remaining at the main Foster City plant.
