Employment Security Comissioner Carver Gayton said growth in seasonal employment was offset by large layoffs in non-certified school personnel, leaving the July rate a tenth of a percentage point above where it was a year ago. Seasonally adjusted, the rate rose to 4.8%.
Total nonfarm wage and salary employment dropped by 23,000. The decrease resulted partly from normal seasonal layoffs of 35,300 noncertified staff at public and private schools, along with the reduction of another 4,200 census workers, Gayton said.
The rest of the economy grew by 16,500 jobs, the agency said.
