But that's about to change. The PA and the state of New Jersey will combine to spend some $750 million over the next decade to revamp and rebuild bridges and overpasses, reconstruct roadways and build all-new infrastructure components.

Officials have described the initiative, dubbed Portway, as "crucial" to the region's economy. Project advisor Bob James has termed the port itself as "ground zero for transfer activity on the East Coast. If we don't do this project, the shipping activity will eventually go to other ports."
