The improvements to the outdoor, upscale shopping center are to be added in three phases beginning by early 2002, following a series of public hearings on the plan.
A 600-stall garage will be built at the north end of the center, giving the shopping center a total of 2,000 parking spaces. To ease traffic congestion, the shopping center will add turn lanes at the 25th Avenue Northeast and Northwest Blakeley Street entrances to the village.
It also has proposed adding an additional southbound lane to Union Bay Place. Pedestrian improvements will include more sidewalks and curbs. For bicyclists, the plan offers a covered area for parking.
University Village was built in the late 1950s. In 1994, it was purchased by Stuart Sloan, who renovated the complex. Since then, it has received numerous urban-design awards, as well as accolades for its profitible blend of locally owned and national retailers.
