The St. Louis-based firm will build the new $85 million facility on UC Berkeley's main campus, replacing the 60,000-sf Stanley Hall. Now half a decade old, Stanley Hall is considered unsafe in the event of an earthquake.
McCarthy will consult with scientists for input on how best to serve a variety of research and teaching needs within the building. Special building-specific systems must also be developed to support scientific research in the facility.
Given the front-end legwork, the project will not break ground until 2002. Completion is expected in the summer of 2004.
