A 44th building has survived, but may not last much longer. Thevacant American Steel & Wire mill, which dates to 1872, isbeing targeted for a new use--and most likely razing--in the wakeof an RFP issued by Mercer County officials.

One plan has been floating around: Last fall county executiveBob Prunetti and developer Bart Blatstein jointly spelled out aplan for a $14-million entertainment and retail project. Butpolitics have gotten in the way and the county appears ready forPlan B. While the entertainment/retail complex is still thepreferred use, other uses aren't being ruled out.

Proposals are due by October 15th.
